Oil reservoir - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An oil reservoir, petroleum system or petroleum reservoir is often thought of as being an underground "lake" of oil, but it is actually composed of hydrocarbons contained in porous rock formations.
The crude oil found in oil reservoirs forms in the Earth's crust from the remains of living things.
Reservoirs exist anywhere from 1,000 to 30,000 ft below the surface and are a variety of shapes, sizes and ages.

Petroleum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The reactions that produce oil and natural gas are often modeled as first order breakdown reactions, where kerogen breaks down to oil and natural gas by a large set of parallel reactions, and oil eventually breaks down to natural gas by another set of reactions.
Proponents of peak oil theory also refer as an example of their theory, that when any given oil well produces oil in similar volumes to the amount of water used to obtain the oil, it tends to produce less oil afterwards, leading to the relatively quick exhaustion and/or commercial unviablility of the well in question.
The oil is landed at Sullom Voe terminal in the Shetlands.

 Completions
Once oil is reached, there is the problem of recovering it, that is moving it to the surface and off to the battery and eventually to the refinery.
The pressure on oil in most heavy oil zones is enough to force the oil into the well but not to the surface.
Reservoir, fluid, and formation pressures are the pressures on the fluid in the pore spaces of the reservoir.

Assessing Reservoir Compartmentalization Using Oil Geochemistry - OilTracers L.L.C.
For example, oil in Prudhoe Bay is known to be a mixture of petroleum from three source rocks of very different age (Masterson et al., 1997; 2001), and source variations are therefore a likely cause of the compositional differences among oils from discrete fault blocks in that field.
Oil which a source rock generates at a given time differs slightly both from subsequently generated oil and previously generated oil due to continuous, subtle changes in the maturity of the source rock and changes in precisely which part of the source rock is in the oil window.
Oil fingerprints, water chemistry, and engineering data suggested that gas and then oil had leaked from the deeper reservoir into selective areas of the shallow reservoir due to poor fault seal and fault-induced juxtaposition of the two reservoirs.

The pressure comes from millions of tons of rock lying on the oil and from the earth's natural heat that builds up in an oil reservoir and expands any gases that may be in the rock.
Oil researchers are studying ways to inject chemicals similar to detergents into an oil reservoir.
Oil trapped in the rocks along that path is washed out of the reservoir, but oil in other parts of the reservoir may be left untouched.

A method of tertiary recovery of oil involving injection of solvents such as ethane, propane and butane which mix with the oil to reduce surface tension and viscosity.
Crude oil that is too thick to flow in its natural state and cannot be produced by traditional means.

 RecipeForOil
In truth, an oil reservoir is a rock with many pores which hold petroleum, much like a sponge holds water.
Oil and gas travel through pores of the reservoir rock, with the help of water, until they reach an impermeable layer of rock through which they cannot pass.
Oil and gas might lie in reservoir rock just under the top of the dome, which is capped by an impermeable layer of rock.

DOE - Fossil Energy Techline: DOE Selects New Research Projects to Help Improve U.S. Oil Production
Plausible reservoir models are relatively easy to generate using static data, such as core, log and seismic data, but they are much more difficult to generate using dynamic data such as transient pressures, saturations and flow rates.
Because the flow properties of reservoir facies-regions of relatively uniform rock properties-can vary greatly, knowledge of their boundaries is of utmost importance for the prediction of reservoir performance.
Unfortunately, the reservoir strata are commonly variable in composition and texture, and the viscosity of CO2 is low relative to the oil.

When free water is present in the oil reservoir during water dehydration, the dry oil from dehydration will eventually get more water condensation from free water settling to the bottom of oil reservoir.

All the oil created by the source rock won't be useful unless it winds up being stored in an easily accessible container, a rock that has room to "suck it up".
A reservoir rock is a place that oil migrates to and is held underground.
It is for this reason that sandstones are the most common reservoir rocks.

 CPGE: Reservoir Engineering
Extremely large volumes of oil remain in such known oil reservoirs and better models are needed to economically produce such oil by enhanced oil recovery methods.
This research will develop better ways to use polymers to enhance the oil recovery from depleted oil reservoirs and provide inexpensive oil from existing domestic oil reservoirs that might otherwise be uneconomic to produce and subject to abandonment.
Moderately heavy oils (about 100 cp) are usually good candidates for alkali-surfactant processes because of their high acid numbers, but are challenging because of the requirement for mobility control.

Reservoir rocks must be porous, because hydrocarbonscan occur only in pores.
A suitable reservoir rock must therefore be porous, permeable, and contain enough hydrocarbons to make it economically feasible for the operating company to drill for and produce them.

 Falcon: High-Performance Oil Reservoir Simulation
Falcon is a high-performance 3-D oil reservoir simulation code customized to run on the CRAY T3D/T3E parallel systems but portable enough to run on other massively parallel processors, traditional vector supercomputers, and even high-performance workstations and workstation clusters.
It is the first commercial-quality reservoir simulator to harness the power of high-performance, massively-parallel computing technologies for fine-scale modeling of large, economically important oil fields in their entirety.
Falcon's capabilities allow oil and gas companies to perform best- and worst-case analyses of drilling schedules and to calculate "what if" operational scenarios for reservoirs.

As the latter opened the bolt was released so that it could be blown back by the spent case's recoil.
Considered an overly complex design this mechanism led to cartridge extraction difficulties; consequently an oil reservoir was used to lubricate cartridges before they were loaded into the gun.
The Fiat-Revelli was theoretically capable of firing some 400-500 rounds per minute and was accurate to 1,500 metres; in practice it fired approximately 150-200 rounds per minute.
