  Mongolia in Transition, 1368-1911
In the early fifteenth century, the Mongols split into two groups, the Oirad in the Altai region and the eastern group that later came to be known as the Khalkha in the area north of the Gobi.
By the middle of the fifteenth century, the Oirad had emerged as the predominant force, and, under the leadership of Esen Khan, they united much of Mongolia and then continued their war against China.
The Oirad were surrounded by the Turkic descendants of the Chagadai Mongols who occupied the lowlands to the east and west, in the three independent khanates of Yarkand (modern Xinjiang south of the Tian Shan Mountains), Ferghana, and Khwarizm.

This is the period of the Mongolian national hero, Tsogto Taji, who is said to have been the only northern Mongol aristocrat to have led his subjects against the Manchus in defense of the southern Mongols.
Meanwhile, many of the Torgut, the westernmost of the Oirad Mongols, began to migrate westward in approximately 1620.
Possibly the movement was a reaction to the growing dominance of the Dzungar Mongols, an Oirad subclan and neighbors of the Torgut to the south.

After Khubilai Khan's Yuan Empire lost its sovereignty on China in 1368, the retreated Yuan royalty from Khanbalik(also known as Dadu, today's Beijing) to Mongolian native land caused a lengthy conflict between it and the local nobles of the Mongolia steppe.
There were three main political and military powers formed in Mongolia gradually during this time: western Mongols(also called Oirad or Borben Oirad), the Ongligud(also called Abaga Mongols or Aru Mongols), and the eastern Mongols.
In 1487, Dayan Khan who ascended to the throne as a direct descendant of Khubilai Khan, reunified eastern Mongols and compelled Oirad and Ongligud subject to his rule.

The Western Mongols (the Oirad), however, were to rise to some prominence on the steppe, becoming for a time a force to be reckoned with by both the Chinese and the Russians.
In 1491-92, this heroic woman, whose exploits recall those of Oeleun-eke, Chinggis Khaan's mother, 'is again depicted at the head of an army which repulsed the Oirad.' It is to her that tradition gives credit for having overthrown Oirad supremacy and restored hegemony to the eastern Mongols (1970: 509).
Second, in her campaigns against the Oirad, she set the stage for Batmönh's attempt at re-uniting the Mongols.
