When people wanted dance they would just move their feet if anyone happened to look in the they would see only the motionless upper and think nothing of it.
A legend about hardshoe dances is that Irish used to dance at crossroads or the earthen floors of their houses and they removed and soaped their doors to a resonant surface for hardshoe dancing.
The céilí dances used in competitions are bouncier more precise versions of those danced in and church basements.

The Shelley School of Irish Dance operates under the direction of Tina Shelley, T.C.R.G (Certified Irish Step Dance and Ceili Dance Instructor by the Commission of Irish Dance in Dublin, Ireland.) Tina Shelley studied since the age of 6 with the Deely School of Irish Dance in Northern California.
It was at BYU where Tina developed the Irish dance program and taught from 1994 to 2003 (except for a brief hiatus as she served as a missionary in Russia from 1996 to 1998.) As part time faculty from 1999 to 2003 Tina choreographed several pieces for BYU's International Folk Dance Team which tours worldwide.
In addition to running the Shelley School of Irish Dance, Tina is the co-Artistic Director for Rhythm of Ireland Dance Company which encompasses the largest and highest levels of Irish Step Dancers in the State of Utah.
