Two people in Ojiya, a 55-year-old man and another unidentified person, died at a hospital after being hit by falling rocks and other objects, NHK and Kyodo News reported.
Kyodo News reported a 70-year old woman died of heart failure at a hospital in Ojiya due to the shock of the quake, and a two-month-old baby was also killed.
Ojiya city official Ei Yoshizawa said the quakes caused windows to shatter, cracks had appeared in walls, and books and files fell from shelves.

Buildings swayed violently in Ojiya, about 260 kilometers (160 miles) northwest of Tokyo, on Monday morning, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.
In Ojiya, 14,500 people had taken refuge at 93 different evacuation centers _ mostly school gymnasiums and public halls _ after many had spent the night in their cars, city officials said.

OJIYA, JAPAN (November 4, 2004) - The Ojiya region in Japan experienced another earthquake today registering 5.2, according to Asia Region Coordinator David Husby in an email message to Covenant News Service.
Husby was writing to report on a recent trip to earthquake-damaged areas by Jim Peterson, who was part of an eight-member team that visited the area to assess the damage.
Ojiya was one of the worst hit locations from the recent earthquake and is only about 30 minutes by car from Nagaoka, where we have a Covenant church.
