 Nevado Ojos del Salado (Chile)
Nevado Ojos del Salado on the crest of the Andes Mountains between Chile and Argentina, at 22,600', is the second highest mountain in the western hemisphere - just 200' lower than Cerro Aconcagua in Argentina.
Ojos is located in the heart of the driest desert in the world, it is not very technical, it is accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicle to the amazing elevation of 17,000', and there are good refuges at 17,000' and 19,400' so the summit can be done as a day hike from the upper refuge.
Ojos was obvious in the distance but did not really dominate since there were plenty of other high mountains with large snow fields throughout the area.

Regardless of its exact elevation, Ojos remains king of the Puna, partly out of mystique, partly due to the easy climbing access (as compared to rival Puna peaks like Pissis), and mostly because all surveys do agree on one thing: Ojos is the highest active volcano on the planet.
The name ’Ojos del Salado’ should be loosely translated from Spanish to mean ’Source of the Salt River.’ Due to its massive height, Ojos routinely pulls any moisture from its surrounding atmosphere.
Ojos has twin summits, which differ in height by less than three feet, as well as a detached southwest summit that is much lower.
