  Okazaki Castle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Okazaki Castle (岡崎城/Okazaki-jo), although not the same castle as was originally built, nor in the same place, nevertheless has a long history dating back to 1455, when it was built by warrior Saigo Tsugiyori.
The castle stood tall until 1873 when, during the Meiji Restoration (明治維新/Meiji ishin), the feudal system was abolished and all castle-buildings were ordered demolished.
Okazaki Castle was reconstructed to its original style and specifications in 1959.

Okazaki was very important place to control Tokaido during the Edo period and fudai daimyo or a damyo who was a hereditary vassal of of the shogun, was assigned as a master of the castle for defensive purposes.
The original castle was ruined, but it was reconstructed in 1959 and became a museum.
Okazaki is also famous for haccho miso, a kind of fermented soy bean paste.

One thing that kind of hit me is how small the castles are as compared to those in Korea and especially the Forbidden City in China.
Unfortunately, this castle is smaller and not as photogenic as Matsumoto-jo, which I saw on one of my previous trips to Japan (and talked about and showed a nice photo of in Asia 2000-01 Update #41).
Interestingly, the Okazaki castle may be more important in Japanese history because Tokugawa Iyeyasu, Japan's first Shogun, was born here.

A pair was with the ducks on the Oto River in Okazaki, and several were on the lake Takaraga-ike in Kyoto (along with domestic white and Chinese geese).
I got lucky three times: One at Okazaki Park, among the low bushes between the moat and the street that separates the park from the river, the staked-out bird at the Imperial Palace Gardens in Kyoto, and another bird (on the same day!) in the shade of some evergreens at the Botanical Gardens.
Three observations, all from Okazaki: along the river, in a small drainage ditch near Okazaki park, and at the gravelly end of the castle moat.
