Son Volt: Okemah And The Melody Of Riot (2005): Reviews
Okemah is heady stuff, to be sure, but it's also one of the year's best straight-up rock albums.
While Okemah is clearly driven by Farrar's vision, it suitably develops Son Volt's sound, bringing it clearly into the mid-2000s while giving a nod toward the influences of bygone days that have always been a factor in Son Volt's alt-country tendencies.
Okemah and the Melody of Riot is an intelligent, aggressive album that acts as a sorely needed kick in the ass to the entire Americana/alt.country genre.

Kevin Bowe and the Okemah Prophets
The Okemah Prophets (Oh-kee-mah) are a group of loose cannons out of Minneapolis, led by singer/songwriter Kevin Bowe.
The group came together for a showcase of Kevin’s songs at SXSW ’98 in Austin, Texas.
Mixing influences like Steve Earle, The Replacements and The Byrds, the Okemah Prophets have their hearts in what some call Americana or alt.country music, but their energy level, their complete disregard for "music politics", their original playing style, gut-wrenching songwriting and diversity of roots influences make this band impossible to pin down.

Son Volt: Okemah and the Melody of Riot - PopMatters Music Review
On Okemah and the Melody of Riot, the first new Son Volt album in seven years, you basically have to forgive Farrar for disbanding the original group and just get over it, because Okemah boasts some of his best songs ever.
From the use of Guthrie's birthplace (Okemah, Oklahoma) in the album's title to its opening track "Bandages and Scars" ("The words of Woody Guthrie ringing in my head"), it's clear where Farrar's head is at and where he's going to take us.
Okemah and the Melody of Riot is a fine return to form from a true original.
