Okinawans are a unique blend of Malay from Formosa and Philippines, Chinese from China, and Japanese (Yamato) from Japan.
Other prominent examples of Okinawan culture include the sanshin, a three-stringed Okinawan instrument, closely related to the Chinese sanxian, and ancestor of the Japanese shamisen, somewhat similar to a banjo.

Okinawan has three short vowels, [a i u], and five long vowels, [aː eː iː oː uː].
Okinawan dialects retain a number of old grammatical features, such as a distinction between the terminal form (終止形) and the attributive form (連体形), the genitive function of が ga (lost in the Shuri dialect), the nominative function of ぬ nu (Japanese: の no), as well as honorific/plain distribution of ga and nu in nominative use.

 RIKodokan Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Main
He first stayed in the Kojo dojo (Kojo was an Okinawan martial artist who taught in Fuchow), and then continued his studies with other teachers, eventually learning some form of Southern Chinese chuan'fa (Japanese: kenpo, or fist-method), under a teacher known as Ryu Ryu Ko.
