Absolute Anime Forum / View topic - Who's Okita?
Nah, he's not Saito's apprentice, Okita Soji was a captain of the Shinsengumi and is actually a real historical person.
He was considered not to be as strong as Okita Soji but he had guts in combat and his left-handed thrust was called the most destructive technique of the Shinsengumi members, this one-hit technique matched well the philosophy of "Aku Soku Zan" ("evil swiftly eliminated" in a loose translation).
His life story and origins are very obscure and somewhat contradictory, some say that he was a son of a ronin while others say he left Edo after killing a person (some say accidentally) to join an army in Kyoto.

According to the "Okita-ke Bunsho" (Okita Family Record), however, lists Rintaro Mototsune as being Mitsu's husband, so it's impossible that he was Soji's father.
Her son Yoshijiro mentions her the same way-- "Eldest daughter of Kondou Touzou of North Tama county, Ozawa Village." Mitsu's true origin as a daughter of Okita Katsujiro and her even having been born into the Okita family are thus hidden.
In his record, "Shinchogumi to Shonai-han" (Shinchogumi and the Shonai domain), he lists Rintaro as "the birth brother of Okita Soji." Rintaro, it seems, told everyone he was Soji's blood brother, and in order to hide this, he listed Mitsu as the daughter of the Kondou family.

 Rurouni Kenshin Fanfic Notes
Despite Watsuki-san's use of Miburô (as "Wolf/Wolves of Mibu") as an admirable term for the Shinsengumi (or, at least, for Saitô), they were in fact referred to as wolves by the citizens of Kyoto for the reckless and brutal actions of two of the original senior captains, Serizawa Kamo and Niimi Nishiki.
Of the captains, it was Kondô, Okita, Tôdô (captain of the Eighth Unit), and Nagakura (captain of the Second Unit) who were at Ikeda-ya.
Okita suffered from tuberculosis (some information I've seen reads that he got it the night of the Ikeda-ya affair, other info that he already had it and that night worsened it) and died in a TB hospital in Edo on May 30, 1868.
