Okushiri is a small island located about 20 km west of Oshima Peninsula, southwestern Hokkaido, Japan.
The Aonae district at the southern end of the island was completely devastated by tsunami that overflowed the 4.5-m high sea wall at the shore; all 82 wooden houses there were swept away.
During the reconstruction, the southern tip was converted to public use as a memorial park, and a 10-m high platform was built to provide people working in the harbor with a high place to immediately evacuate to since the 1993 tsunami had arrived only five minutes after the earthquake.
