Ol' Dirty Bastard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ol' Dirty Bastard (ODB) was the stage name of Russell Tyrone Jones (born November 15, 1968 in Brooklyn, New York, died November 13, 2004 in Brooklyn, New York), an American rapper and one of the founding members of the hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan.
Ol' Dirty Bastard might best be described as the court jester of the Wu-Tang Clan: he simultaneously brought a measure of comic relief and a somewhat disturbing touch of the absurd.
ODB entered rehab while still technically a fugitive from the law, but strange behavior during a subsequent court date sent him to jail for a brief period.

In November 1997, Ol' Dirty Bastard was arrested for failing to pay nearly a year's worth of child support -- around $35,000 -- for the three children he had with his wife, Icelene Jones (by this point, he'd fathered a total of 13 children, beginning in his teenage years).
ODB was extradited to New York, where he stood trial on not only his prior drug charges, but also the various traffic violations and a charge that he violated the protection order on Icelene Jones in 1998.

Ol' Dirty Bastard, a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan and one of the most eccentric personalities in hip-hop, died of unknown causes on Saturday in New York.
Dirty's best-known antic came at the 1998 Grammy Awards, when he took the stage and interrupted Shawn Colvin's acceptance speech to complain that the Wu-Tang Clan had lost to P. Diddy in a different category (see "Ol' Dirty Bastard Tells Why He Stormed Grammy Stage").
In early 1999, ODB was pulled over in New York for a traffic violation and was accused of firing a gun at officers, although those charges were later dismissed when the police failed to prove their claims.

ODB's legal and personal shortcomings behind him (he's been shot twice, and has over a baker's dozen in arrests and illegitimate children), Dash trumpeted the return of a sober, new-and-improved Ol' Dirty, claiming the acquisition of the Wu-Tang member into the Roc-A-Fella fold marked the "evolution of an empire."
ODB's proponents' biggest defense of his style and his importance as an MC, is that, beyond all others, he "keeps it real." Unlike other fakers, there has never been any doubt by anyone that he is as crazy as he sounds on wax.
ODB's fans are boastful of his insanity, and have waved it proudly as a banner throughout all his missteps, court-imposed rehab stints, and incarcerations.

ODB solo debut is niiiice -- R.I.P. The 2nd member of the Wu to drop a solo did it with fashioon.
Anyhow, on this album, Dirty reshapes what is traditionally acceptable as a hip hop verse, laughing and belching over his lines, leaving half-bars of empty space here and there, breaking out into singing and screaming, smashing a 16-bar verse convention, launching into a hook whenever he's ready.
Dirty's willingness to follow his feeling over any pre-established conceptual foundation results in the introduction of a 'freejazz' type attitude in hiphop, stretching the possibilities of the genre.

This puts ODB's case between a rock and a hard place because if ODB says no to the deal and is found not guilty of the drug charge, he could still have to answer to the bail jumping charge.

Ol' Dirty Bastard's life has certainly been stranger than fiction.
He first entered a rehab program about the same time his second solo album was being released, only to escape a court mandated clinic in the fall of 2000, becoming the music world's most endearing fugitive, despite his addiction problems and uncanny knack for entangling himself in endless legal snafus.
Long hailed as the Wu Tang Clan's most misunderstood genius, ODB was able to elude capture long enough to do a jump-up with the Wu crew at a December concert in New York City, only to be nabbed a week later at a Philadelphia McDonalds.

This final gesture turned out to be fittingly enigmatic: Ol' Dirty Bastard, long hip-hop's resident jester and, moreover, its most tragic figure, died of still-unknown causes the following afternoon in a New York recording studio, two days shy of his 36th birthday.
Born Russell Jones, he was one of the great pop culture eccentrics, a reliably difficult character the likes of whom rarely last long enough in the public eye to arouse anything other than passing indignation and revulsion.
Thing was, by most accounts, the ODB who made it out of prison was a sober one.
