He was the son of Johannes Rudbeckius and father to Olaus Rudbeckius, junior.
Rudbeck was one of two discoverers of the lymphatic system, see history of medicine, when he was very young, and this made his career very successful.
Unfortunately, much of his work was lost in the fire that destroyed most of Uppsala in 1702 (during which Rudbeck himself directed the people of the city, shouting orders from a roof while his house burned down).

Johannes Rudbeckius was professor of mathematics and theology at the University of Uppsala.
He attended the lectures of Johannes Franckenius and Olaus Stenius on botany and anatomy.
He received a grant from Queen Kristina to study abroad; he went to Leiden in 1653 where he completed his medical education and also a degree in botany before 1655.
