Olavs most important act as king, was to Christianize huge parts of his kingdom, though sometimes he had to use violence.
Olav is the founder of Nidaros and he is supposed to have raised a church at Moster.
Olav was approved king together with his brothers Øystein and Sigurd Jorsalfar, but since he wasn't king over the whole country, he does not belong within the official row of kings.

Though Olav Tryggvason had attempted to introduce Christianity to Norway in the late 10th century, many Norwegians still clung to their pagan gods and it was only after the death of his successor, Olav Haraldson, at the battle of Stiklestad some 30 years later that Christianity acquired a focal point in Norway.
Olav's men buried him in sandy ground near the river but when miracles began to happen he was moved to the town's only church.
His nephew, Olav Kyrre, built the great stone church over the place where the saint's body had lain which is now Nidaros Cathedral and Trondheim's finest building.

King Olav Kyrre and his men used Vågen as their haven on the way to the king's farm on Alrekstad.
Remains of shells, oysters and fishing tackle have been found in excavations, showing that fishing occurred on Vågen. There are even records of shoals of herring, and in the days of Absalon Beyers in the 16th century, fishing nets were thrown from Finnegården.
An old saying proclaimes that "Bergen wasn't founded by Olav Kyrre, it was founded by the stockfish." It was here, along Vågen with Bryggen, its wharfside sheds and the hansa traders, that Bergen grew to be a city of commerce.

On Olav's return to Norway in the summer of 995 he was likely to be well-off with Anglo-Saxon coins.
Among several thousands of coins of foreign prototype we find only three which with absolute certainty may be referred to as Norwegian: They are three pennies from Olav Haraldsson and which all were part of a hoard found at Stein in Hole in Ringerike (Norway).
Instead Olav Kyrre begins to strike pennies of half the weight, but of the good, old silver contents.
