Olavi: I was really into Kiss when I was young, Ace was my biggest idol and I wanted to be like Ace.
Olavi: I don't know, I haven't heard it that much, just a few songs now and then on the radio or tv.
Olavi: Basicly it's the same thing we always done, there is more epic tone on a few of these songs.

 Daily Vault - November 18, 1999
Be warned if you don't have a thick skin concerning things like this: this isn't the album to play when you have the parish priests over for dinner and a brandy.
The twin-guitar attack of Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg doesn't always seem to rise up to the level of power I think they're capable of.
And while Ted Lundström gets a chance to have his bass guitar work shine on "Legend Of A Banished Man," I thought he was buried too far back in the mix.

Versus The World : Amon Amarth - Spirit of Metal Webzine
Just one year after « The Crusher », Olavi Mikkonen’s band has got his big back in business with « Versus The World ».
The drums give a pleasant performance with rolls that fit good the group’s compositions and the Vocalist keep the same death voice that he got us used to.
Congratulations to the swedish but also and especially the finnish Olavi Mikkonen that remain the lead artist of the group.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the songwriters in the band: Olavi Mikkonen, who still pens the majority of Amon Amarth material, needs some serious help from his fellow bandmates.
Not only is Mikkonen’s writing particularly one dimensional, but it’s also surprisingly predictable for this once intrepid Swede.
The song uses a myriad of tempo and atmospheric changes to fit Hegg’s near-perfect, multi-pitched roar; the guitar work here is of special note as it shows when Mikkonen has the fire, he blazes the fretboard with barbaric fury.

Disappointingly however, Olavi Mikkonen’s wondrous lead guitar work is not nearly as prominent, a crucial component mostly left behind from Versus the World’s heart churning emotional drive.
Standing in my mind overall, from track to track, despite all the positives, is the infrequency of Olavi’s lead guitar solos and yearning melodies.
I don’t miss them simply for the sake of having a melody to follow or connect with, but rather because he is a guitarist with a rare sense of melody who blazes with each individual note rather than speed.

Opening with the energetic epic "Death in Fire," Amon Amarth resume their mid-paced attack in full glory, as the guitars lay down some of the most majestic, glowing sounds of their career.
There's still nothing technically impressive about the work of guitarists Johan Soderberg and Olavi Mikkonen, but the mood they weave is seductive.
They also know how to arrange those riffs into great songs, a skill long lost to most of the bands in their genre.

Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg form a great guitar team.
While they don't shred away (there are barely any guitar solos on the album), the rhythm playing is excellent.

Vocally speaking Johan Hegg commands your respect from the get go, a midrange growl of doom Hegg emulates fierce power combined with strife combined with if you fuck with me I will make you pay.
Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg are keyed right in with riffs of spirit that burn the impression of contention with the order of business focused on piercing delusion.
Following up the backbone Ted Lundström’s bassist ability fits the bill but from an overall view stands out much like a needle in a haystack.

Looking back, the bands that helped contribute to the explosion of the Swedish sound was firstly Entombed, followed by Dissection, Dismember, At The Gates, In Flames, et al.
Listening to this quintet's sound, rounded out by bassist Ted Lundstrom and guitarists Johan Soderberg and Olavi Mikkonen, it is easy to see where they absorbed their influences from -- At The Gates especially.
Their Swedish sound, added to their lyrical and thematic bent, makes Amon Amarth a hybrid in a way.

Just something so damned triumphant and headbangingly BROO-TAL about experiencing a new AMON AMARTH album you can't help but want to raise a brimming horn of mead to the heavens and throw the horns to the Gods of Metal, ale, and beards in grim and frostbitten gratitude!
The quintessential Viking/Death Metal band of all time, AMON AMARTH (Johan Hegg/vocals, Johan Söderberg/guitars, Olavi Mikkonen/guitars, Ted Lundström/bass, and Fredrik Andersson/drums) are virtually peerless within the confines of their chosen subgenre of Norse-themed Death, with perhaps only their booze-soaked, shield-hewing fellow countrymen in UNLEASHED currently offering up much of anything in the way of competition.
I cracked a smile from ear to ear the moment I threw this on for the first time.

A particularly crushing version of “Death In Fire” closed out Amon Amarth’s set but “Fate of Norns,” “The Pursuit of Vikings” and “For The Stabwounds In Our Backs” levelled the crowd as vocalist Johann Hegg hoisted an actual horn of mead strapped to his hip between songs.
Windmill headbanging from guitarists Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Soderberg got the crowd whipped up and as Hegg stated “Death In Fire” would be their last song of the night, a collective groan panned across the crowd.
To say that Amon Amarth got one of the largest turn-outs for an opening band at an early show (they went on an 7:30PM) and best responses from a crowd I have ever seen is an understatement.
