Bennington is a town located in, and one of two shire towns of, Bennington County, Vermont.
The town is known primarily for the Battle of Bennington, fought during the Revolutionary War (the battle was actually fought a few miles further west, in the state of New York).
Of these, Old Bennington is the original settlement, dating back to 1761 when Congregational Separatists arrived from Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The W. Bradford Hook and Ladder Co. #1 was organized on October 28, 1886, and moved into the quarters of the old Engine Co. #2 on East Main Street above Branch Street and took over the village's hand-drawn hook and ladder unit.
On September 6, 1893, it was voted to contract with private parties for the construction and rental of a new fire, house to quarter a hose company and the Bradford Hook and Ladder.
In 1983, the department converted the fire alarm service truck into an equipment truck for firefighting gear and assigned it to "The Hooks." This truck was replaced in 1992.

With reports that substantial stores were in the Bennington area, two of Burgoyne’s units (under the command of Lieutenant Colonels Friedrich Baum and Heinrich von Breymann) of approximately 700 British, Indian, Loyalist and German mercenaries headed for the arsenal depot located at the present Monument site.
Under Stark’s command was the entire Bennington force, consisting of approximately 2,000 Vermont, New Hampshire and Berkshire County (Massachusetts) volunteers, most of whom were untrained.

Settlement of the town was delayed until 1761 by the last French and Indian War, and was barely underway when the settlers became involved in their long title dispute with New York.
The controversy was at its height when the Revolutionary War began (because the "Yorkers" were primarily Tory in sympathy) and Bennington was at the center of it (because New York's most bitter enemies, the Green Mountain Boys, chose to make their headquarters there).
Even though the actual engagement was fought in New York, it will always be known as the Battle of Bennington.
