For example, the Earth is unlikely to have existed before the Sun and all other stars, plant life could not have survived millennia without sunlight, flowering plants could not have been pollinated without insect life, and most birds could not survive long without terrestrial life.
Other Old Earth creationism camps hold that the Sun, Moon and Stars were only given their mission or status by God on the fourth day, not literally created ex nihilo.
One argument is that there are a number of passages which seem to indicate the antiquity of Earth (many of which are poetic) for example Proverbs 8:22-31, although they are also compatible with a 6,000-year-old earth which is likewise "old" from the perspective of a human lifetime.

Beliefs about origins, including the theory of evolution and creation science
New Earth creationists believe that the earth, its life forms, and the rest of the universe were created by God during a six day, 144 hour, interval, fewer than 10,000 years ago.
Old Earth creationists believe that geology and radiometric dating has shown that the world is billions of years old.
Those old earth creationists who believe in the literal interpretation of an inerrant Bible interpret the six "day" creation interval as occupying a very long interval of time.

 Old Earth Creation Perspectives
Most creationists believe in a literal six-day creation as described in the Bible, and an earth age in accordance with the scriptural genealogy, but not all.
There are a large number of Christians who accept the scientific community's assessment of earth's age, and some have made alternate interpretations of the scripture in keeping with the evolutionary time line.
Discussion of life forms on the earth in the world prior to the seven days of Genesis and the type of life forms placed on earth at the regeneration of Genesis 1:3-2:1.

Chapter 7 et al. of Hypertext Book: A New Look At An Old Earth
Every time a scientist has said (correctly) that some particular fossil was millions of years old, and we laughed at him, judging him to be a fool, we have actually driven him farther from salvation.
If we creationists would simply allow God's universe to speak for us instead of against us, then maybe a few more scientists would be able to see the hand of God at work in His creation and would come to know the saving truth.
Historically, the understanding that the earth turns on its axis was not even suggested until Aristarchus (born 310 BC) nor the theory made well known until Nicolaus Copernicus 1473-1543 AD.

The god of an old earth
Christians who believe in an old earth (billions of years) need to come to grips with the real nature of the god of an old earth — it is not the loving God of the Bible.
The god of an old earth is one that uses death as part of creating —death therefore can’t be the penalty for sin — or ‘the last enemy’(1 Cor.
The god of an old earth cannot therefore be the God of the Bible who is able to save us from sin and death.

Evidence for Evolution and Old Earth, A Catholic Perspective
The purpose of this article is to reveal the scientific evidence in favor of an old earth and (more controversial) macroevolution (defined as "the theory of universal common descent with gradual modification").
The theory specifically postulates that all of the earth's known biota are genealogically related, much in the same way that siblings or cousins are related to one another.
Young-earth creationists (whether Catholic or evangelical), thinking they had an ally in their fight against science, were no doubt very disappointed when they read this from Behe at the beginning of his book (supposedly) challenging evolution:

Reasons To Believe: Notable Christians Open to an Old Earth Interpretation
Scientists start to conclude that the universe is billions of years old because they are finding objects whose light is reaching us now, which must have taken one to four billions of years to reach us.
The creationist points to the evidence for the Second Law of Thermodynamics that the universe is running down as evidence that it had a beginning along with the other evidence for the Big Bang theory.
