On August 17, 1959 the Old Faithful Inn was shaken by a massive earthquake which collapsed the dining room fireplace chimney, and also damaged the huge lobby fireplace, reducing the number of usable hearths from eight to two.

The Old Faithful Inn would be better served by shutting down or simplifying its menu service and/or serving a buffett meal with several options.
The best meal we had in the park was the Old West Cookout meal, which was simply steak, cole slaw, beans, corn bread, potato salad, fruit and cobbler.
