Old Gringo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Old Gringo is a 1989 film starring Jane Fonda, Gregory Peck, and Jimmy Smits.
They use her luggage to smuggle weapons to the servants at the Miranda hacienda, who in turn aid the attacking revolutionary army of General Tomas Arroyo (Jimmy Smits).
During the attack, a sardonic "Old Gringo," who is really American author Ambrose Bierce (Gregory Peck), joins in the fighting on the side of the revolution, operating the track switch that ensures a railroad flatcar laden with explosives reaches its target.

Fuentes and the tragic chorus of Mexican characters elevate the tale of the Old Gringo to the status of myth; ironic, since Bierce is barely remembered here, but then one of his themes is that we are a people without memory, while the very soil of Mexico carries memories.

Unlike the character known as the Old Man or the Old Gringo in the novel, Ambrose Bierce is immediately identified by name and is immediately recognizable by character traits.
Here, the Old Gringo is all that one would expect Ambrose Bierce to be -- abusive, arrogant, conflicted, bitter, supremely sarcastic and, strangely enough, admirable.
Because the events of the film occur during the revolution in Mexico, one might be tempted to think of Old Gringo as an action oriented war film.

Pardon the snobbery, but there were probably many a moviegoer who had no idea who Bierce was, and sadly, Old Gringo needed to dumb things down a bit; the mysterious Bierce angle just doesn't work, especially since the film remains pretty dumb on its own, and chiefly because nothing really happens.
Had Bierce been alive when Old Gringo was released, he could have utilized his famous quote: "Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret." Only this time, Bierce wouldn't regret it.
