The cliffs in the Harry Rocks area and onwards to Ballard Point and Ballard Cliff are very hazardous (at least one person has fallen and been killed) and it is important not to approach the edges for photography or as viewpoints.
The middle and right-hand ones are from an old hand-painted geological map of the area from Braye (1890).
Old Harry, the name for an isolated stack, is incidently, a medieval name for Satan (Bruce, 1989).

Poole Bay was a valley running east - west between the present coastal cliffs and a chalk ridge running from the Purbeck Hills to the Isle of Wight.
The Old Harry Rocks and the Needles are all that remain of that ridge.
