Hokie did finally make it out of the hospital, but she was never again able to handle life on her own in her little chickee on the Tamiami Trail.
Finally, however, Hokie, at age 86, was packed off to the nursing home where she declined quickly and died of a broken heart and body in the spring of 1995.
Hokie was one of the last of her kind, and, in that way, was kin to the many other things that are disappearing from the River of Grass.

Hokie Stone is actually several types of limestone common in Southwest Virginia and parts of Tennessee and Alabama.

When the Hokies took a 14-0 lead with 4:38 left in the first quarter, Pitt had 77 total yards and 40 rushing to Virginia Tech's 13 total yards, all rushing.
The Hokies were having trouble with a thick layer of thatch that interfered with drainage and made the field slick.

"How can we be nationally ranked in so many areas and still be a secret?" Hokies past and present can only sigh and shake their heads, because the fact that Virginia Tech is a good school in a nice place to live was never a secret in Blacksburg.
