DefenseLINK News: Old Ironsides Sails Again
WASHINGTON -- The stately sailing ships of old are long gone from the seven seas, but July 21, people in Massachusetts had a chance once again to see their full-blown glory.
The USS Constitution, the Navy's three-masted, 44-gun frigate known as "Old Ironsides," went to sea for her first unassisted voyage under sail since 1881.
Old Ironsides, built in Boston in 1797, was one of the first six warships authorized by Congress.

The initial cost of "Old Ironsides" was $302,718; her original tonnage was 1,576, with a displacement of 2,200 tons, with a measurement of 204-feet length and 43-1/2 foot beam.
Commodore William Bainbridge in command of "Old Ironsides," was wounded twice, and the ship's wheel was shot away, but for more than 2 hours he maneuvered brilliantly and fought tenaciously until, finally, JAVA had no masts left standing and her Captain lay dying.
Immediately after that a poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes, called Old Ironsides, was written to generate public support for "Old Ironsides." In response to an outcry of public support for preserving her, the Navy paid to refurbish CONSTITUTION.

This famous poem celebrating the U.S.S. Constitution, the storied frigate of the War of 1812, was written as a protest after the poet read of a U.S. Navy plan to scrap the vessel.
The poem was first printed in the Boston Daily Advertiser, at the time when it was proposed to break up the old ship as unfit for service.
Such a national object of interest, so endeared to our national pride as Old Ironsides is, should never by any act of our government cease to belong to the Navy, so long as our country is to be found upon the map of nations.

When again ready to fight, "Old Ironsides" was shut in the Boston harbor for eight and a half months by the strenuous British blockade except for a short cruise under Captain Charles Stewart.
Homeward bound with her two prizes, "Old Ironsides" was chased by a British squadron, but her good luck and Captain Stewart's seamanship saved her and her prize Cyane, although Levant was retaken by the British.

Both movies are set during the same time period but the storylines are very different with the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) versus the Barbary Pirates being the setting here and in the classic Hollywood tradition there is a woman involved.

LLS has taken the liberty of including three poems by Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes in our Poems for Patriots section, in part because Holmes is frequently confused with his jurist son and namesake Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
His first popular poem was Old Ironsides, which he wrote in 1830 as a patriotic protest against the decision of the Secretary of Navy to destroy the fighting ship The USS Constitution (popularly known as Old Ironsides).
Old Ironsides was published the next day, and it became wildly popular.

Here, he examines the unique qualities of "Old Ironsides" and why the poem cannot be judged by ordinary poetic standards.
Given that there does not seem to be anything tricky or complex about Oliver Wendell Holmes's love poem to an old battle ship, it hardly makes sense that "Old Ironsides" has lasted as long as it has in the standard corpus of American literary classics.
It isn't a very good poem by conventional measures, nor is the ship useful, and yet both have stayed with us, capturing the imaginations of new audiences year after year.

Because the oak planks that it was made of were some 7 inches thick and bullets could not penetrate it; they seemed bounced off of the sides of the ship as if it were made of iron.

One of the Navy's most historic relics, USS CONSTITUTION, berthed at Boston Naval Shipyard across the harbor from her birthplace, the old location of Hartt's Shipyard, stands as a fitting memorial to the glory of the Navy and seamen of long ago.
Historians attribute the extreme longevity of the titan of the old United States frigate fleet to two intangible things, the poetic skill of Oliver Wendell Holmes and the sentimental will of the American public.
From 1909 to 1925, "Old Ironsides " was anchored in the Boston Navy Yard and was used as a Naval museum.
