Old Left, New Left, What's Left?-Paul mattick, jr
The remains of the Old Left were waiting with "theory" and organisational discipline for those who ascribed the failure of their previous efforts to the lack of these two items.
The strength of the New Left is to be sought in the fact that the liberalism of its beginnings and the Leninism of its later stages represented nodes of failure.
The failure of the Old Left organisations to develop in the USA during and after the Great Depression may be traced indeed to the fact that the Democratic government and the trade unions filled the role played in Europe by "socialist" workers' Organisations.

The Old Left exhibited a passionate desire to end the exploitation of one social class by another but they were not willing to change the social order entirely.
So, the Old Left, rather than act as a direct stimulus to social change, by the 1960s had become an obstacle to such change.

The Suicide of New Left Review
In the 1960s the "new left" had a very clear system of principles that distinguished it from the "old left", embodied in social democracy and communism.
Admiration for rightists and calls for intellectual union with them (to judge from everything, on the basis of their positions) is the perfectly logical consequence of a fundamental approach at whose heart is a refusal to critically analyze the myths of neo-liberal capitalism.

Herbert Pimlott | From "Old Left" to "New Labour"? Eric Hobsbawm and the Rhetoric of "Realistic Marxism" | Labour/Le ...
Hobsbawm's interventions were persuasive because of his ability to situate the only two possible options for the Left in such a way that "there is [was] no alternative," a phrase made famous by Thatcher in her ripostes to those who would question her leadership.
Hobsbawm's representation was and is difficult to argue with because he presents his interpretation of the crisis of the Left as just the "facts," the situation "as it is." He recognized that to defeat the Conservatives, electorally, there was a need for an alliance and compromise.
References to Lenin were particularly important because he was the foremost Marxist on the "hard Left," and Hobsbawm's citation of the Bolshevik leader worked to undermine a key thinker in the traditionalist camp, whose writings normally provided a justification and a "guide to action" for "fundamentalist" elements on the revolutionary Left.

Old Left Versus New Left in Latin America - Military Photos
In fact, the more important recent developments within the Latin American left may lie not so much in the horserace results of elections, but in the growing differences between modernists and revanchists, between national interests and ideology.
But the differences between the modern and archaic left, and the three countries’ contradictory national interests, seem to be trumping more superficial political affinities.
There's not only this kind of political differences within the left but also others traditional divides, like the old resentment from spanish speaking neighbours to portuguese speaking Brazil, some hispanics are traditionally afraid of Brazil's size and importance in the region and accusations of Brazilian historical imperialism and expansionism are made.

Where the Left Goes Wrong on Foreign Policy by Murray N. Rothbard
But the left, too, is changing with the times; although it can always be counted on to oppose American support for rightist regimes, increasingly the left has abandoned the lessons of the 1960s to advocate its own, more "progressive" brand of intervention on behalf of radical regimes and social movements.
Another disquieting aspect of left opinion is a tendency to cast a blind eye toward the dictatorial or totalitarian character of the socialist regimes that it tends to favor.
One wonders, in fact, whether the left is at all prepared to accept a foreign policy in which the United States government allies itself with no one and retires from the world scene, leaving all international encounters to the private realm of free trade, travel, and cultural and social exchange.
