Old Man of the Mountain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The State Emblem contains the Old Man of the Mountain with the state motto 'Live Free or Die'.
The Old Man of the Mountain, also known as the great stone face, was a series of five granite cliff ledges on Cannon Mountain in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA that, when viewed from the correct angle, appeared to be the jagged profile of a face.
The writer Nathaniel Hawthorne also used the Old Man as inspiration for his short story called "The Great Stone Face," first published in 1850, in which he described the formation as "a work of Nature in her mood of majestic playfulness."

After retiring from mountain biking in 1996 at the age of 40, Overend quickly found a new focus for his competitive energy, and for the last six years has habitually stomped competitors half his age on the Xterra offroad triathlon circuit.
Overend quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the world of mountain running, winning Silverton, Colorado's grueling Kendall Mountain Run (a 13-mile slog to a 13,000-foot summit) and placing second in the infamous Pike's Peak Marathon in both 1980 and 1981.
