Old Montreal (or Vieux-Montréal in French) is the oldest area in the Canadian city of Montreal, dating back to colonial times.
Located in the borough of Ville-Marie, the area is usually thought of as being bounded to the west by McGill St., to the north by Saint Antoine St., to the east by Berri St., and to the south by the Saint Lawrence River.
Old Montreal itself is a major tourist draw; with the oldest of its buildings dating to the 1600s, it is one of the oldest urban areas in North America.

Old Montreal is more than just a sentimental expression used to describe a vague district around the harbour; specifically it refers to the area on the waterfront that extends north to Craig Street and is delineated by McGill Avenue and Berri Street on the west and east sides respectively.
In Old Montreal, many of the houses crowded within the walls were of wood, but after a number of fires the French government forbade the use of wooden shingles which were to be replaced with tin.
The confusion of old masonry and fire-escapes along the eastern part of rue de la Capital has little in it to suggest that this was one of the liveliest streets in the city.

Old Montreal can get very crowded and very touristy during the summer since this part of town is full of tourists, so if you are the type of visitor that want to stay away from the other tourists, better visit old Montreal in the off season or early in the day because it's worth it.
Montreal's Hôtel de ville (city hall) is on the east side of the Place Vauquelin and the Old 'old' court house is to the west.

Old Montreal is, as you probably guessed, the old part of Montreal, and is situated near the St-Laurent river (southern part of Montreal).
Note that outside the tourism period in old Montreal (between October and April), there isn't much going on, but the museums are still open as are the restaurants and bars (there's also skating in the old port in the winter).
