In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000, the C'tan (also called "Star Gods"; in fact, C'tan is said to translate as "Star God") are incredibly powerful, god-like entities which feed on the energy provided by stars and souls.
The Old Ones were pushed to the fringes of the galaxy and apparently allowed to remain there - the Codex: Necrons describes their last outposts as besieged, but also describes the Old Ones as having 'utter supremacy' in battle at this stage.
Desperate to rectify the situation, the Old Ones created new servant races to use as warriors and weapons against the C'tan; however, this was to prove their undoing.

Old Ones (Warhammer 40,000) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Where the Old Ones were long lived, with an average lifespan of many millennia, and had access to technology that allowed them to travel from world to world instantaneously, the Necrontyr were short lived, and were bound to one world.
This new invasion dealt a fatal blow to the Old Ones (all of whom were killed or fled) and forced the C'tan and their minions into hiding, as the C'tan (who feed on the sentience of other beings) had their food supplies stolen from them.
In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000, the Slann were a reptilian or amphibian species who were servants of the Old Ones, although current background fiction states that they in fact are the Old Ones, not unlike the Lizardmen of Warhammer Fantasy.

 [No title]
The war against the Old Ones was not as simple as either the C'tan or Necrons has believed it would be, and wars raged between the C'tan themselves, forcing the star gods to take shelter and slumber while they waited for a more opportune time to destroy what remained alive.
Millions of years of battle between the C'tan and their enemies the Old Ones, left the universe a barren and torn place and the Old Ones had little recourse than to speed up the evolution of the young races and use their mastery of psychic power and the warp to destroy the C'tan.
Old favourites such as the 'We'll be back' rule are still around, but have been updated slightly to take into account changes in 40K 3rd Edition, and like the Terminator from the movies they have a nasty habit of getting back up again no matter how hard you hit them.

As they came in to contact with the Old Ones, the longevity nearing on near immortality and mastery of the universe the latter displayed resulted in terrible and vengeful conflict.
Despite the scientifically advanced nature of the Necrontyr, they were consistently outmaneuvered by the old ones who used their warp portals and understanding of the universe to dramatic effect.

 Servant of the “Old Ones”
It is possible that the Old Ones are equivalent to the Dragons (or perhaps lizard men, as it is pointed out in their army book that they in fact traveled to the future to avert a great disaster) of the Warhammer Fantasy game.
