While the old light on the bluff to the north of the harbor continued to serve as a guide to mariners off shore, it served virtually no assistance in guiding them through the 120-foot opening between the thousand-foot long protective piers which were being built.
Thus the decision was made to eliminate the old lighthouse, and to continue use of the building solely as a dwelling for the keepers.
When this post was eliminated in 1992, the Coast Guard leased the building to the Port Washington Historical Society, which used the structures as a museum, with the long term goal of restoring the station to its turn of the twentieth century appearance.

The building became the office building for our government-in-exile during World War II; and as the Philippine flag was raised on July 4, 1946, a small group of officials solemnly raised the flag of our independent Republic in Washington.
It so happened that by this time, the old Victorian embassy building was in an advanced state of decrepitude; it's derelict state a cause for national embarrassment and quite a bit of head-scratching since the government felt it couldn't otherwise afford the cost of either building a new embassy or refurbishing the old one.

The Ariel Rios Building is across 12th Street from the Old Post Office, in the Federal Triangle in Washington, D.C. The Rios Building is now the headquarters of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
In the 1920s, Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon's building commission developed the Federal Triangle and actively sought the Old Post Office's demolition, as it did not conform to the guidelines of the building commission.
The Rios Building has been refurbished with the architectural details of the hallways preserved in the style of the 1920's and 1930's.
