The Rhine canyon (Ruinaulta) in Graubünden in Switzerland
Since the Rhine flows from the Alps, a precondition of its existence is the uplifting of the Alps, which began in the Alpine Orogeny.
These highlands helped to divert the Rhine to the west; however, the Rhine's course is set by the Rhine graben, a rift that opened in the Eocene and Oligocene periods between the western Alps and the central Alps, caused by their moving in slightly different directions.

 Rhine - LoveToKnow 1911
The Rhine rises in the mountains of the Swiss canton of the Grisons, and flows for 233 m.
In Roman times the Rhine at this part of its course seems to have been a full and flowing river, but by the 9th century it had lost itself in the sands of Katwijk, and it was not until the beginning of the 19th century that its way to the sea was re-opened.
The Rhine has been one of the chief waterways of Europe from the earliest times; and, as its channel is not exposed to the danger of silting up like those of the Elbe and the Oder, it has always been comparatively easy to keep it open.

 Leiden - LoveToKnow 1911
LEIDEN or Leyden, a city in the province of South Holland, the kingdom of the Netherlands, on the Old Rhine, and a junction station 18 m.
The two branches of the Rhine which enter Leiden on the east unite in the centre of the town, which is further intersected by numerous small and sombre canals, with tree-bordered quays and old houses.
Of the numerous churches the chief are the Hooglandsche Kerk, or the church of St Pancras, built in the 15th century and restored in 18851 9 02, containing the monument of Pieter Andriaanszoon van der Werf, and the Pieterskerk (1315) with monuments to Scaliger, Boerhaave and other famous scholars.

Rhine. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
At Basel the Rhine becomes the Upper Rhine of the Germans and turns sharply N to Mainz across the broad-floored Rhine rift valley, a large graben, or down-faulted block, between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mts.
A third distributary, known as the Crooked Rhine, leads to Utrecht and continues west to the sea as the Old Rhine; it is linked with Amsterdam by the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and thence by the North Sea Canal to the North Sea.
The Rhine was declared free to international navigation in 1868, and in 1919 navigation of the river between Basel and Krimpen, on the Lek, and Gorinchem, on the Waal, was placed under the authority of the Central Rhine Commission, with headquarters at Strasbourg.

The Ill, which wanders tranquilly through the old heart of Strasbourg before decanting into the Rhine some distance to the northeast, seems made for a medieval city—small enough for little humpback bridges, tame enough for swans, quiet enough to hear the plink of a briefly surfacing fish.
Particularly around the old quarter known as Petite France, where the river divides into a series of short canals, green and mirror-smooth, it perfectly complements the cobbled lanes and picturesque jostle of steep-roofed houses, their white facades knitted together with squares and X's of fl timbers.
The 50-mile cruise through the Rhine gorge, where the river passes between dark, enclosing hills liberally sprinkled with castles, is the high point of the trip, and it was evident that many of my fellow passengers had over-imbibed and were not feeling their best.

Rhine discharge is divided among three distributaries: Waal (6/9 of total discharge), Nederrijn-Lek (2/9) and IJssel (1/9).
The Rhine has a mixed snowmelt and rainfall discharge, with a peak discharge in the spring and a smaller peak during the early summer.
The damming of the Old Rhine distributary and some other channels, like the Hollandse IJssel (1285 AD) and the Linge (1307 AD), reduced the number of Rhine distributary to the present three, and there was a tendency for the main flow to shift southwestwards.
