Left-Right politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Virtually every elected official during this period in the United States took a stance of anti-Communism; it was not until the mid-1960s that the New Left arose and, in some cases, proclaimed its "anti-anti-Communism", without, for the most part, actively embracing Communism.
In recent years, with the rise of globalism and neoconservatism on the right, the term paleoconservative (the "old right") has emerged to describe the localism, isolationism and classical liberalism of the right wing of years recently passed.
The terms "left" and "right" have been coming into wider use again in the U.S. during the George W. Bush administration, mostly due to their use in the context of controversial issues which the citizenry is divided over (e.g., the left supports abortion, the right does not).

Life in the Old Right by Murray N. Rothbard
The Old Right was a coalition of ideologies and forces that did not have one single, common, positive program, but "negatively" it was solidly united: all opposed the New Deal and were committed to its total repeal and abolition – lock, stock, and barrel.
Old Right Republicans, the soul of the party, always managed to lose the presidential nomination, perpetually stolen from them by the Eastern Establishment-Big Banker-Rockefeller wing of the party, who used their media clout, as well as hardball banker threats to call in the delegates' loans, to defeat majority sentiment in the party.
As time passed and Old Right heroes passed away and were forgotten, many of the right-wing rank-and-file, never long on historical memory, forgot and adapted their positions to the new dispensation.

To the Old Right, post-World War II America was analogous to the old regime that Burke defended against the French Revolution and Enlightenment.
In doing so, the Old Right and the mainstream conservatism it led were coopted into supporting the very regime their professed ideology should have resisted, and, from that process of cooptation, alliance with, and eventual deference to, the neoconservatism then emerging was only a short march.
Given their own fairly conventional conservative assumptions and predilections, the Old Right has generally found paleoconservatism unsettling, but, even when they have sympathized with it, most Old Rightists were still far too frightened to raise their voices against neoconservative infiltration and the looming destruction of the conservative movement.

Clark wrote that, "[t]he Doctrine states a case of the United States vs. Europe, and not of the United States vs. Latin American." It was meant to act, and had acted, "as a shield between Europe and the Americas."
