Topic: Old School (film)

  Old School film review
What distinguishes Old School is that while it mines familiar ribald frat humour, because its protagonists are three 30 something men who have become ensnared by the trappings of adulthood like wives and children, they bring with them an evolving if underdeveloped sense of decency.
While Beanie is comfortable balancing his arrested development with married life, Mitch is always trying to deny or disown the fraternity, particularly when an old high school crush, Nicole (Ellen Pompeo), re-enters his life.
Old School makes little pretension to be anything other than funny and stupid, which it undoubtedly is. But in addition it shows that although the appeal of returning to our carefree adolescence often looms large, especially as we become burdened by responsibility, when given the opportunity, going back is never quite the same.

Old school - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Old school, variously spelled old skool, oldschool or oldskool, is a slang term referring to an older school of thinking or acting and to old objects in general, within the context of newer, more modern times.
Old school is often interchangeable with the word nostalgic, but practitioners of semantics often define old school as simply something of an earlier period but not necessarily inferior or hopelessly dated.

OLD SCHOOL may not have the depth, poignancy or class of it's progenitor ANIMAL HOUSE, but it does capture the spirit of utter irresponsibility in the quest for pleasure that makes that film so great.

Old School (2003) - A Review by David Nusair
Old School is that rare comedy that, although it's not tremendously funny, still manages to entertain due to some impressively strong performances and a brisk pace.
Director Todd Phillips' last film was Road Trip, a surprisingly enjoyable gross-out comedy that managed to do the one thing most films of that ilk are unable to: it contained characters that were compelling enough that the film remained entertaining, even when it wasn't all that funny.
Old School is one of those films that's best enjoyed when viewed with a large, enthusiastic crowd.

Underwater Photography Tips & Tricks by Stephen Frink: Film versus Digital
The digital-vs.-film debate has raged in recent years, with old-school film hounds questioning the technical skill required to create images that can be tweaked infinitely after capture, and digital fans wondering why anybody would want it any other way.
To an extent, similar controls are available to a film shooter in the analog darkroom or with a scanned image, but it is certainly easier to effect "underexposure salvation" on digital than it is with film.
Film would be better for prints 30x40 or larger; but for smaller sizes, it's probably a nonissue.

"OLD SCHOOL" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Old School's implication is that all men in Beanie's situation feel suffocated, care little for their families, and are just waiting for a chance to throw off their adult responsibilities.
From a real-world standpoint, this movie relates with the film "National Lampoon's Animal House." Both of these films were considered extremely offensive for their times and both have or will go down as being college film classics.
He almost makes up for the rest of the film being as sick and perverse as it is. But, it can be considered to be extremely offensive.

 Old School (2003): Reviews
The 1978 frat-house classic "Animal House," starring the late, great John Belushi, is the model for testosterone-mad comedies such as this, and while it hasn't that film's scope or finesse, Old School does have Ferrell, a man clearly in touch with his inner Belushi.
Old School is exactly what director Todd Phillips intends for it to be: low-brow, moronic to a fault, and occasionally side-splittingly funny.

The film shows us Kane (played by Welles himself; he was also an amazing actor...and writer, and editor, and he filled all those roles on this film) warts and all, from the perspectives of all those who knew him, even those who hated him.
It's unfair to say the film is dated, though; it's better to say that its story of sexy rebellious youths breaking out from their hum-drum lives to play Robin Hood and fight back against the Man captured the spirit of the time.
This is a quiet, careful film about a quiet, careful man, but as it sits there being quiet and careful, it'll creep up on you, and you'll suddenly realize that the suspense and paranoia have been steadily building to such a level that now you just want to scream.

Movie Review - Old School - www.ericdsnider.com - The Official Website of Eric D. Snider
"Old School" is, in fact, an old-school film in the spirit of "Porky's," with "Saturday Night Live" alum Will Ferrell filling the John Belushi role of chief mischief-maker and beer-imbiber.
It also attracts the attention of a crusty old dean -- yes, this college-hijinks movie has a crusty old dean -- named Pritchard (Jeremy Piven), a long-time rival of the trio from their own college days 10 years earlier.
As he has proven on "Saturday Night Live" and multiple small film roles, he excels at loosy-goosey, dignity-free merriment and can deliver even the most average of punch lines with enough lunacy to merit a laugh.

SIFF is young by that standard but old by comparison to the newer and more profitable paradigms of entertainment: video, pay-per-view, cable, home satellite, DVD, video games, computer games, handheld computer games, computers themselves, the Internet, digital convergence, digital video, digital this, digital that.
