Old Shatterhand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Old Shatterhand is a fictional character in over 70 western novels by German writer Karl May (1842-1912).
Old Shatterhand is the alter ego of Karl May and May himself tried to establish that he experienced all the adventures in person.
In the stories, Old Shatterhand got the name by his friend Sam Hawkens, who also originates from Germany (but already is an oldtimer in the American west), as he was able to knock out his adversary with a single stroke.

Old Sleuth, with Old King Brady and Old Cap Collier one of the most popular dime novel detectives, was created by Harlan P. Halsey (1839?-1898), a director of the Brooklyn Education Board and author of many dime novels.
The "Old Sleuth" is one of the earliest written usages of the word "sleuth," Halsey having shortened the term "sleuth-hound," and the character was largely responsible for the public identifying the name "Old Sleuth" with fictional detectives; this lasted at least until 1908, when a nickelodeon film, "Old Sleuth, the Detective," was made.
The Old Sleuth, as it happened, was much better at being violent than at being a detective, and that was at least as much of a help to him in solving cases as his being a detective was.

Shatterhand, the nickname derived from his capacity to break the bones of those he punches, is a young German engineer who travels out West to help with a railroad survey.
I recall, particularly when Reagan was president, how the Europeans, who wanted to appease rather than confront the Soviet Union, would always refer to him as a cowboy, and how in their mouths the word had a pejorative connotation that made little sense to us ugly Americans.
Of course, Old Shatterhand is doing nohing to become a Savior of the Indians, and for a review of the first book of a trilogy from 1893 (with a sequel), there is no irony to be found in the nationality of Old Shatterhand.

The hero of many of these works was Old Shatterhand, a German immigrant, who along with other German Westmänner ("westmen") such as Old Surehand, Old Firehand, and Old Wabble, traveled the West seeking to bring Christianity and justice while fighting unscrupulous white men and renegade Indians.
Old Shatterhand, as Ralph S. Walker has described him, was "an illustrious German superman who could speak, read, and write forty languages, who roamed the world as a writer and archeologist, never made a mistake he couldn't rectify, smoked cigars, and worshipped the Protestant God.
He sent out photographs of himself dressed as Old Shatterhand or Kara Ben Nemsi (hero of a series of novels set in the Near East), and in 1899 he toured the Orient for eighteen months, allegedly to visit "old friends" there.
