THE first use of Florida's new electric chair - a replacement for the 75-year-old "Old Sparky" which was scrapped after it set fire to a condemned man two years ago - ended in a grisly, bloody scene yesterday.
Lawyers for Davis had appealed unsuccessfully to the United States Supreme Court to stop the execution, claiming the electrical equipment in the new chair was the same as in "Old Sparky" and produced insufficient voltage painlessly to kill a man the size of 25-stone Davis.
Davis, condemned to die for battering to death a pregnant, 37-year-old mother in 1982 and then shooting her daughters, aged five and nine, was electrocuted with 2,300 volts.
