The building was declared open on 3 August 1939 by Sir Shenton Thomas and handed over to the Chief Justice, Sir Percy McElwaine, on the same day.

The Old Supreme Court Building - Law and History 2: Lawlink NSW   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Courts, which until then had sat in the General Hospital in Macquarie Street, now moved to the Georgian School and it was there on 17th May, 1824, that the first Chief Justice of NSW, Francis Forbes, read the Charter of Justice establishing the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
A public meeting in the court house in February, 1830, was alarmed at the condition of the roof and it became necessary to brace the roof with additional poles and columns.
At the opening of the 1896 law year, which coincided with the occupation of the new court, the building was described as "bright and pleasant, quiet and comfortable", probably everything the original court house was not.

Supreme Court Queensland - Supreme Court History Program
The old Supreme Court building in Townsville was located on Cleveland Terrace, Melton Hill and led a varied existence throughout its 100 years, serving as the School of Arts, a museum, the courthouse, and home to the Department of Transport.
Converting the building for use as the Supreme Court prompted community debate, as the price of conversion escalated from £1,000 to £2,703. This was on top of the purchase price of £5,005, which included land, building and transportation of furniture from Bowen.
However, the old court building was not in good condition and the National Trust of Queensland commissioned an expert inspection report with the intention of determining the feasibility of using the building for the Townsville Music Centre.
