Old Times - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of Harold Pinter's most popular plays, Old Times was first presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Aldwych Theatre in London on June 1, 1971.
When Anna visits her old friend, Kate, and Kate's husband, Deeley, in the country, reminiscing about old times quickly turns into a battle between Anna and Deeley for control over Kate, who ultimately demonstrates that it is she who has the control over them both.
The play demonstrates that the power to manipulate memory can be as dangerous as any weapon as characters relive and revise their own histories to cement or break the social bonds between each other.

Also, the mystery of Old Times may be attributed in part to a montage-like effect: the juxtaposition of different characters' memories serves to add complexity to any one account of the past.
Old Times, Pinter's fourth full-length play and the first to follow the disappointing reception for The Homecoming in 1965, opened June 1, 1971, at the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End under the auspices of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
My vocabulary [in directing Pinter] is all the time about hostility and battles and weaponry, but that is the way Pinter's characters operate, as if they were all stalking around a jungle, trying to kill each other, but trying to disguise from one anot her the fact that they are bent on murder.

Times Square was Brechtville: a perfect demonstration of the principle that the market, left to itself, will produce an economy of crime as happily as an economy of virtue.
Times Square may be spectacular—that is what its signmakers have called their own signs for a century—but in the theoretical sense it’s not a spectacle at all.
Times Square, as so often in the past, is responding, in typically heightened form, to the general state of the city: the loss of retail variety troubles us everywhere, as a new trinity of monotony—Starbucks, Duane Reade, and the Washington Mutual Bank—appears to dominate every block.

"Old Times" is, with its development from ideal to reality, very much about innocence and experience, not in any sexual sense, but in the sense of a person becoming mature in the way he sees the world.
Indeed, "Old Times" would not be a Twain writing if there were not at least a few side trips during the piece's journey from beginning to end.
