From Bratislava you could go by a highway to Trencin, which is a nice typical Slovak city.
The people are MUCH friendlier and the prices MUCH lower outside the city...The Old Town is nice, and deserves a day or two, but that's about it unless you meet people there who know the local places.
The hotel has the old world charm you are looking for (not to mention incredible mountain views from the rooms).
