Mentioned in 1091, it is the oldest of the towns of Prague gained the privileges of a town in the 13th century.
The 65m-tall Powder Tower was begun in 1475 during the reign of King Vladislav II Jagiello to form one of the 13 entrances to the Old Town.

The buildings forming the Town Hall used to belong to the merchant Wolflin vom Stein, but were purchased in 1338 by citizens of Prague to establish their Town Hall.
Because of the destroyed 19th century part of the Town Hall, the St. Mikulas is able to dominate this part of the Old Town Square.
Although the towers of Týn cathedral dominate the west side of the Old Town Square, the church itself does not, since its mass is hidden behind other buildings.

Until 1817, the Rynek or town square of Old Town Warsaw had a town hall in the middle of it, but it was torn down to make more room for the merchants who traded there.
The entrance to Old Town is marked by a 72-foot high Corinthian column on top of which is a bronze statue of King Zygmunt Waza, the monarch who was responsible for moving the capital of Poland from Krakow to Warsaw in 1596, after Poland and Lithuania united into one country.
I visited the Old Town on my first day in Poland, and was not yet used to the fact that one American dollar was more than 3 Polish zlotys, so when a carriage driver told me that a ride was 60 zloty, I immediately protested that it was too much.

 The Grote Markt, or Market Square of Antwerp, Antwerpen.
The Grote Markt is beautifully surrounded by the Town Hall and the so-called houses of the Guilds or corporations.
Most of the houses were rebuilt afterwards by Hans Vredeman, the town architect, in Flemish Renaissance style.
