Forest age is often used to define old growth, and is probably the best single indicator of old growth forest conditions because many old-growth attributes are directly related to stand age.(5) At most locations in the Pacific Northwest, forests can be classified as old growth between 150-250 years and older.
The current amount of mature and old growth forest is likely smaller since a considerable amount of logging has occurred on these forests since these inventories were conducted.
