There are several towns which lay rival claims to be the oldest town in Britain: Abingdon, Oxfordshire; Colchester, Essex; and Marazion, Cornwall.
Abingdon is a market town in the Thames Valley in southern England and is one of several places which claim to be Britain's oldest continuously occupied town.
Colchester claims to be Britain's oldest recorded town, on the basis that it is mentioned in passing by Pliny the Elder, the Roman writer, in his Natural History (Historia Naturalis) in 77AD.

In 1971, our town wall was made into a Scheduled Ancient Monument, although this failed to prevent the subsequent destruction that was to follow to sections of the wall and the ongoing neglect of the east section especially.
During the course of this the burial ground associated with the earliest Christian church in Britain was desecrated.
All future permissions for developments within the town wall (and in areas where Roman occupation archaeology is expected to be in evidence) should be granted on the basis of the possibility of raising any new structures on piles (or legs), such that the archaeological features can be preserved and made accessible to future generations.
