Oldham County was created from sections of Henry, Jefferson, and Shelby counties on December 15, 1823, and was named for Col. William Oldham of Jefferson County, a Revolutionary War officer and a native of Virginia.
Oldham was killed in 1791 while leading a regiment of Kentucky militia against the Indians during the St. Clair campaign on the Wabash River.
The Oldham County region was explored by Col. John Floyd in 1774 and, being close to the Ohio River, it was settled rapidly.
