 Oldman River Case
The benefits of irrigation from the construction of the St. Mary and South Saskatchewan River Dams were significant and this became evident from the 1940s on.
The Oldman River Dam at the Three Rivers site (Oldman, Castle and Crowsnest Rivers) in particular represented an opportunity to undertake a major water development project (see map).
The Three Rivers site was favoured from the outset, though even the government’s own studies identified this as a site with especially negative environmental and social consequences (fish and wildlife habitat, ranchers whose property would be divided and flooded, and because of the impacts on the Peigan Indian Band who lived downstream.

The Oldman River Basin, located in southwestern Alberta, extends north to High River, east to Grassy Lake, west to the Crowsnest Pass in the Rocky Mountains, and dips south across the 49th parallel into Glacier International Peace Park in Montana.
The main tributaries of the Oldman River are the Livingston, Crowsnest, Castle, Waterton, Belly and St. Mary Rivers, in turn supplied upstream by numerous small streams, springs and wetlands.
The headwaters of the Oldman River rise in the west, in the high elevation Montane foothills of fir and pine forests, where relatively small pockets of human activity impact the health of the water and land.

The river takes a sharp turn both in direction and character as it approaches rock plates that transform the river from a mountain stream to a foothill river, and ultimately a prairie trout stream.
The fly fishing scene on the Oldman is different from many of the classic trout streams, yet quite similar to the remaining watersheds that have good bull trout populations.
This isn't intended to downplay the river, it is to point out that because of this project, the likelihood of other dams being created in Alberta in the near future is now remote due to the incompetence of the way this one was handled.

But since the construction of the Oldman river dam, many different and diverse crops have been able to be grown in Alberta with a great amount of abundance.
Active resistance on the Oldman River Dam came from a group of Peigan Natives, the Peigan Lonefighters Society, who in August 1990 began to divert the river using an excavator to render the multi-million dollar dam useless.
The Friends of the Oldman River strongly felt that the construction of the Oldman River Dam, would severely alter and damage local riparian biomes, wildlife habitat, and aquatic life in down stream from the dam.

Its task was to address the issues raised by the public during the first study, and to make recommendations concerning overall water management in the river basin, including the incorporation of the concerns of area residents.
It also stated that the Three Rivers site was the preferred location, but added that the final decision would be deferred until the Peigan Indian Band had an opportunity to submit a proposal for construction at the Brocket site.
The purpose of the R.S.C.C. was to ensure that proposals that may affect federal areas of concern are subjected to environmental review, and it actively followed the progress of the dam proposal until it was decided that the dam would not be built on Indian land.

Alberta's Crowsnest River, by Vic Bergman
The river travels in an easterly direction through the mountains and communities of the Crowsnest Pass before entering Oldman Dam Reservoir near the village of Cowley, approximately 30 miles downstream.
The river is relatively small here and it's not until several other tributaries join in a bit further downstream before it begins to increase in size.
When the river's lower sections become discolored during spring runoff, the upper reaches usually remain clear and fishable—something to keep in mind if you're planning to fish the Crowsnest early in the season.

The Oldman River crossing is the first in Alberta to use the NU Girder section, which can optimize weight and length with slender cross section and prestressing strand concentration at the base.
While the Oldman River job proved an ideal target to debut the streamlined girder, a dead-of-winter construction schedule had the potential to chill most anyone connected to it.
The girder and post tensioning scheme behind the Oldman River replacement bridge is consistent with technology producers have exploited over the past decade to incorporate prestressed concrete into longer span practice.

There is the odd lake trout caught in the river in the Lake Louise area, upstream to Bow L. Below Lake Louise the river plays a game of ping pong between the railway on the north side of the valley and the Trans Canada highway on the south, literally bouncing back and forth.
There is no other river quite like the Bow: one would be hard pressed to think of anywhere else in the world that you can enjoy a gourmet meal in one of Calgary's many fine restaurants and within an hour be catching some of the finest and wildest trout available anywhere.
Successful Bow River fly fishermen aren't closed~minded to new tricks or new methods; adaptability and willingness to change will see dramatically different results: when the fish are rising it is dry flies; when they aren't it's time to chose from an accepted set of nymphs or streamers chosen by guides from their years of experience.
