Oldsmobile V8 engine - Definition, explanation
The engine could be classified as a small-block, but Oldsmobile used a higher deck height for a 4.25 in (107.9 mm) stroke to boost displacement to a big-block-like 455 in³ (7.5 L).
It was the first mass-produced OHV V8 in 1949; the first use of electronic port fuel injection in 1976; and was the last carbureted engine passenger car engine in 1990.
The original Oldsmobile V8 was originally to be advertised as "Kettering Power" after chief engineer Charles Kettering, but company policy disallowed the use of his name.

The engine could be classified as a small-block, but Oldsmobile used a higher deck height for a 4.25 in (107.9 mm) stroke to boost displacement to a big-block-like 455 in³ (7.5 L).
The Oldsmobile engine was very similar to the Buick engine, but not identical: it had larger combustion chambers with flat-topped (rather than domed) pistons, six bolts rather than five per cylinder head, and slighly larger intake valves.
The 1967 4-4-2 Rocket was a 400 in³ (6.6 L) V8.

Buick V8 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another Buick "400" engine was a member of the 400/430/455 family and was produced from 1967 to 1969.
It was the standard engine on the Invicta, 1959-66 Electra, 1962-66 Buick Wildcat, 1963 Riviera and 1965 Riviera (the 64 and 66 Riviera models had a 425 in³ engine with a single 4 barrel carb.
Originally intended for 180 in³ (2.9 L) displacement, Buick was designated by GM as the engine design leader, and decided to begin with a larger, 215 in³ (3.5 L) size, which was deemed ideal for the new "senior compact cars" introduced for the 1961 model year.

A V8 engine is a V engine with eight cylinders.
V8 engines are rarely less than 3 litres in displacement and in automobile use have gone up to 8.5 litres or so.
V8 is also a beverage made of juices from 8 vegetables, specifically: tomatoes, beets, celery, carrots, lettuce, parsley, watercress, and spinach.

Although Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac also designed V8 engines (see list of GM engines), it was Chevrolet's 350 in³ small-block that became the GM corporate standard.
The 327 in³ (5.4 L) V8, introduced in 1962, was bored and stroked to 4 in (102 mm) by 3.25 in.
The engine's physical dimensions (oversquare 4.00 in bore and 3.48 in stroke, 102 mm by 88 mm) are nearly identical to the 400 hp (300 kW) LS2 engine of today, but of course much has changed.

 Cadillac V8 engine
This engine was modified with a 3.5 in (88.9 mm) bore for the 1936-1948 346 in³ (5.7 L) engine.
This huge engine was not based on the 429 but instead was a complete redesign with a different firing order, non-siamesed intake and exhaust ports, and improvements in alloy and casting which reduced its weight.
Although Oldsmobile and Pontiac have borrowed the Northstar architecture for their V8 (and even V6) engines, it was not until the 2005 Pontiac Bonneville that a non-Cadillac car used the Northstar name.

From 1955-74, the small-block engine was known as the "Turbo-Fire V8".
The 262 was a 4.3 L (262 in³) 90° pushrod V8 with an iron block and heads.
While similar in displacement to the other 4.3-4.4L V8 motors produced by General Motors (including the Oldsmobile 260 and Pontiac 265, the small bore 267 shared no parts with the other motors and was phased out after the 1982 model year due to inability to conform to emission standards.

Pushrod - WOI Encyclopedia Italia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Lifters or tappets reside in the engine block between the camshaft and pushrods.
The cause is historical: The OHV engine came first while OHC engines were developed as more expensive high-performance engines and have largely replaced the pushrod design, particularly in countries where cars are taxed based on engine displacement.
Compare this to modern OHC engines that rev to 7,000 rpm in the case of ordinary engines, to 9,000 rpm in the case of high-performance engines like the one used in the Honda S2000, and even past 10,000 rpm in specialty engines.

Oldsmobile's Rocket V8 engine was the leader in performance, generally considered the fastest cars on the market and by the mid 1950s their styling was among the first to offer a wide, "open maw" grille, suggestive of jet propulsion.
Oldsmobile was among the first of GM's divisions to receive a true hardtop in 1949, and it was also the among the first divisions (along with Buick and Cadillac) to receive a wraparound windshield, a trend that eventually all American makes would share at sometime between 1953 and 1964.

I was already aware that Oldsmobile V8 engines had long come equipped from the factory with only single-exhaust except for some fairly-rare occasions, such as vehicles equipped with high-output 455 engines or some models of the Cutlass produced until 1976.
All Oldsmobile exhaust manifolds used on vehicles originally equipped with single exhaust, however (except the Toronado), are equipped with a passenger-side manifold that accepts a crossover pipe from the driver's side manifold, then has a larger outlet to the muffler system.
Oldsmobile dual exhaust manifolds are now being reproduced by The Parts Place for about $400; see The Parts Place Catalog (note that this link brings up a PDF catalog for Cutlass-442 parts; the W/Z manifolds are listed on the left-bottom of page 36).

As jet engines were developed after the war, it soon became evident that conventional lubricating oils couldn't withstand the high temperatures and pressures, and synthetics came to be used in all military commercial jet aircraft engines.
Following the year-long demonstration, each of the engines was disassembled, both to determine the levels of sludge, varnish, and rust that had accumulated inside the engine, and to carefully measure the amounts of wear experienced on critical engine components.
Finally, if you know that your engine has significant sludge or varnish buildup, common among petroleum-lubricated engines with higher mileage or that have had infrequent oil changes, it is sometimes recommended that it be flushed with an engine cleaner before switching to synthetics.

Olds FAQ -- Oldsmobile V-8 History
Oldsmobile is the oldest continuing car marque in the U.S. The Olds Motor Co. was incorporated in 1897 with an initial capital investment of $50,000.00!
Oldsmobile produced an "L" head or flat head V-8 from 1916 to 1918 and from 1919 to 1921, but it was a side valve engine, not OHV.
This engine had a number of interesting features: overhead valvetrain, hydraulic lifters, oversquare bore-stroke ratio, forged crank with counterweights, aluminum pistons, full-floating wrist-pins, and a dual plane intake manifold.

Introduced in 1993 in the Cadillac Allante, Eldorado and Seville STS, the 4.6L 32-valve dual overhead cam all-aluminum V8 engine was a quantum leap forward for U.S. automakers.
In 1994, the first Northstar V8 (L37) was joined by a second version (LD8) with a different cam profile that lowered peak horsepower slightly to 270 hp but increased torque output in the lower rpm range for improved throttle response and quick acceleration.
The two basic versions of the 4.6L V8 (275 and 300 hp) are still being used in model year 2003, and there are no plans to replace this engine in the immediate future.
