OLE BORNEMANN BULL (1810-1880), Norwegian violinist, was born in Bergen, Norway, on the 5th of February 1810.
Ole Bull's "polacca guerriera" and many of his other violin pieces, among them two concertos, are interesting to the virtuoso, and his fame rests upon his prodigious technique.
The term "bull's eye" is applied to many circular objects, and particularly to the boss or protuberance left in the centre of a sheet of blown glass.

On the 150th anniversary of Bull’s land purchase, a few hundred people gathered in what is now Pennsylvania’s Ole Bull State Park to commemorate the violinist’s attempt to form a Norwegian colony in the area.
It was Bull who in his national-romantic efforts to promote a distinct Norwegian identity in a country then dominated by Sweden took the initiative to establish the first Norwegian-speaking theatre in the country, in Bergen, and who went out and recruited a brilliant but struggling playwright from Skien in East Norway to head the theatre.
It was Bull who persuaded Grieg’s parents to send their son to Europe for his musical education, and soon Grieg came to consider Bull his mentor.

We do know a good deal about Ole Bull’s personality and the events of his life from 19th century accounts and from his actual letters, the tone of which I have sometimes imitated here.
We know that Bull barnstormed on the Ohio River, that he played American fiddle tunes at the ends of his concerts, that he met American musicians, and that on this particular night in 1868 his steamboat caught fire and he swam ashore.
