Dahl and Nygaard were the first to develop the concepts of class, subclass (allowing implicit information hiding), inheritance, dynamic object creation, etc., all important aspects of the OO paradigm.
Dahl became a full professor at the University of Oslo in 1968 and was a gifted teacher as well as researcher.

Kristen Nygaard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Together with Ole-Johan Dahl he developed SIMULA I (1961-1965) and SIMULA 67 - the first object-oriented programming languages, introducing the concepts upon which all later object-oriented programming languages are built: objects, classes, inheritance, virtual quantities and multi-threaded (quasi-parallel) program execution.
Internationally he is acknowledged as the co-inventor of object-oriented programming and the programming language Simula with Ole-Johan Dahl in the 1960s.
In February 2002 he was given, once more together with Ole-Johan Dahl, the 2001 A. Turing Award by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), with the citation: "For ideas fundamental to the emergence of object oriented programming, through their design of the programming languages Simula I and Simula 67."

 The History of Simula
The SIMULA programming language was designed and built by Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard at the Norwegian Computing Centre (NCC) in Oslo between 1962 and 1967.
Dahl and I started out to make a simulation language, but of course we have spent so much time with all these people working on general purpose languages, that I must admit we have to some extent fallen in love with the concept of general purpose languages.
Dahl and Nygaard decided early on that if SIMULA was to become a real programming language, and not just an academic 'paper language,' they would have to join forces with one of the dominant programming languages.

And Ole-Johan Dahl, 1931-2002, pioneer (with Kristen Nygaard, 1926-2002) of Simula and objects, classes, and inheritance.
Dahl, Dijkstra, and Hoare's writings in this book offer a snapshot of how the software world looked in 1972, a scant three decades ago, yet an age away in terms of technology.
The third and final chapter has Dahl and Hoare talking about hierarchical program structures, which actually talks about classes and objects, making this certainly one of the earliest books to do so.

digi.no - Kristen Nygaard og Ole-Johan Dahl vant i Høyesterett
