It is worth the trip even if "Oleanna," which started life as a two character stage play, has not successfully made the trip from stage play to film.
"Oleanna" A film review by Linda Lopez McAlister on "The Women's Show" WMNF-FM (88.5), Tampa, FL April 15, 1995 I didn't think "Oleanna" was ever going to play the Tampa Bay area, but it has finally turned up over at the Beach Theater in St.
But there are about four films playing at the Beach this weekend so "Oleanna"'s only being screened at 1 p.m.

Hutchings is one of two cast members in Assumption’s upcoming production, Oleanna, a riveting, turbulent play about the dynamics between John, college professor accused of sexual harassment, and his accuser, a young female student.
Brian Tivnan, Assumption’s theater instructor and the play’s director, directed Oleanna years ago as the head of Forum Theatre in Worcester.

 Oleanna and The Children’s Hour
The objective reality of the characters in Oleanna cannot be seen except through one framework or another – so it is one’s own frameworks that one confronts when watching the play.
Indeed, the whole point of Oleanna, as I understand it, is to bring the audience to the recognition that it is, in fact, (mis)reading – interpreting based on what the audience brings to the theatre itself, its own mental baggage.
Carol’s confession scene in Oleanna is a key example of Mamet’s use of gaps in the narrative.

 Oleanna
Oleanna is a play by David Mamet about the power struggle between a university professor and one of his female students who accuses him of sexual harassment and, by doing so, spoils his chances of being accorded tenure.
The play has often been characterized as an attack on political correctness and affirmative action, yet it should also be viewed as a close scrutiny of power relations, especially in the elusive world of academia.
Oleanna has also been turned into a movie directed by Mamet, starring William H. Macy and Deborah Eisenstadt.

 SparkNotes: Oleanna: Context
Unusually, Oleanna is almost entirely lacking in the profanity that characterizes Mamet's work." This absence may be due to the play's educational setting or simply the nature of the characters; in this sense, the play is an example of Mamet breaking stereotype and proving his range as a writer.
He has often been accused of writing females as males, and Oleanna tests the bounds of this characterization: Carol is not particularly feminine, but Mamet signifies her sex by giving her several undesirable, weak traits that contrast John's, such as her depression and her consumption by self-doubt.
Mamet wrote Oleanna soon after the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, which were a huge factor in bringing the term "sexual harassment" into household usage.

 filmcritic.com Movie Review: Oleanna
Oleanna was first a play that made theater audiences upset and angry before it became a movie that died at the box office, probably killed by its political content.
Oleanna seems to me to be basically one-sided -- Carol’s grievance is portrayed as manufactured, and her harassment charges are an opportunistic attempt to steal the academic success she cannot earn.
This is not true, however, of David Mamet’s Oleanna, which fearlessly addressed the issues of sexual harassment with the subtlety of a slap in the face.
