Olecko district refers to the historical East Prussian district of Oletzko (Kreis Oletzko) with its administrative district town at Marggrabowa.
Treuburg was renamed to Olecko and resettled with Polish expatriates expelled from the eastern parts of Poland (currently in Ukraine) taken by the Soviet Union after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
As a border district, Olecko and the nearest region was the scene of bloody fights in 1914-1915, whose traces have remained here in the shape of monuments of the dead and numerous military cemeteries.
In 1790 in Wojnasy near Olecko was born Krystyn Lach Szyrma - a writer and a scholar, a philosophy professor at Warsaw University.
A plebiscite in Olecko in 1920 was a catastrophic failure.

In recognition of his work, Bohdan and the "Olecko Waystation" were presented with an award by the Polish Cultural Foundation during the a contest called "The Small Homelands - a Tradition for the Future," and the Foundation has asked Bohdan to assist its program to develop local democracy.
In 1996 he was recognized as a national expert on the empowerment of small towns by USAID's "Dialogue Program." The agency has selected Waystation Olecko as a national model to use in educating other social activists, and it intends to lend its support to establishing the program in neighboring countries.
Bohdan was born in the 1960's and is a historian and former teacher.
We looked for a lunch spot, came upon a charming little restaurant on the way into town and decided to see what we could find in the center.
Olecko’s natural beauty and lakeside setting appear to draw many Polish tourists.

The Warmia and Mazury Special Economic Zone is a dispersed zone with the total area of 524.07 ha.
It is located on 12 plots of land situated near the following towns: Bartoszyce, Dobre Miasto, Elbląg, Lidzbark Warmiński, Mława, Morąg, Mrągowo, Olecko, Olsztyn, Ostróda, Pasłęk and Szczytno.
Olecko is situated near the borders of three countries: Kaliningrad District of Russia, Lithuania, Belarus and have attractive location among lakes and woods which makes a favourable location of the town.
For the second time The Promni had the honor to participate in the international folk festival in Olecko, a small town based in the polish lake district -the Mazurian region.
This time Olecko hosted 14 groups from Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Poland.

The Warmia - Mazury Special Economic Zone is located in the north - eastern Poland within the boundaries of Warmia-Mazury Province.
The Zone consists of 524.07 ha divided into 12 areas: Bartoszyce, Elblag, Dobre Miasto, Lidzbark Warmiński, Mława, Morąg, Mrągowo, Olecko, Olsztyn, Ostróda, Paslek and Szczytno.
The Zone is located close to Polish national border with the Kaliningrad District of the Russian Federation.

OLECKO, Poland _ The fattened cows grazing placidly, the sea of wheat on gently undulating hills, the deep forests and pristine lakes _ all paint a picture of rural contentment that conceals the wrenching poverty of Warmia-Mazury.
Under German tutelage, the town of Olecko was called Treuburg, and it achieved fleeting fame as the site where Hitler's athletes trained for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
