Oleg Makarov was born on January 6th 1933 in the village of Udomlja in the Udomel'ski district in the Kalinin region (nowadays known as Tver) into the family of a military man. Between 1946-1949 he lived in the city of Weimar of East Germany where his father served.
Oleg successfully passed entrance examinations and was enlisted in the oldest technical college of the country.
Makarov was to have piloted the orbital module while Leonov left "tracks on the Moon".

Makarov then joined a design bureau, where he was involved in developing the control board of the early Vostok spacecraft and then in the design of the Voshkod and Soyuz spacecraft.

Makarov joined the Soviet space program in 1964, helped design the Soyuz spacecraft, and was selected to be an engineer cosmonaut in November 1966.
Makarov’s first flight was Soyuz 12 in September 1973, the first Soviet manned mission in the wake of the Soyuz 11 tragedy which killed three cosmonauts during reentry.
The three-man crew of Makarov, commander Leonid Kizim and flight engineer Gennady Strekalov overhauled several systems inside Salyut 6 during their 13 days in space, allowing Salyut 6 to be occupied in early 1981 for another long duration mission.
