Olenellina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Olenellina is a suborder of the order Redlichiida of Trilobites.
Olenellina are the earliest trilobites in Cambrian stratigraphy.
No calcified protaspis is known, the body is flattened and the cuticle is thin.

 Trilobite Origins
The earliest occurring trilobites in the fossil record are the Olenellids, members of the order Redlichiida, suborder Olenellina, and particularly the Fallotaspididae.
These taxa belong to the suborder Olenellina, which are distinct among trilobites in primitively lacking facial sutures: though other groups may have secondarily lost facial sutures, Olenellina are believed never to have had them.
The unique primitive condition and the circumstantial but voluminous evidence that fossils from this group underlie all others, prompts the view that Olenellina are the ancestral trilobite stock.

 REDLICHIIDA FACT SHEET
With a primitive lack of facial sutures, and a stratigraphically early range, the Olenellida have been recognized as distinct sister taxon to "typical" trilobites, and arguments have been made to exclude them from the Trilobita.
Fortey (1990) argued effectively for maintaining the Olenellina as trilobites, albeit they serve as the primitive sister group to all trilobites bearing facial sutures.
The relationship between the Olenellina and Redlichiina is by no means clear.

To code this node, all taxa considered by Lieberman (1998) and where applicable by Lieberman (1999) were coded for all of the characters utilized in the phylogenetic analysis presented above.
There are other characters which vary within the Olenelloidea, but which are absent or invariant in the other exponents of the Olenellina.

Furthermore, specimens of a new species referable to Nevadia Walcott, 1910, are recognized in strata traditionally treated as within the Fallotaspis Zone, which is held to underlie the Nevadella Zone, suggesting further biostratigraphic complexity within the basal Lower Cambrian of southwestern Laurentia.
