The potentially impacted stretch of the Olentangy River is both an “Exceptional Warm-water Habitat” (the highest water and biological quality found in an Ohio stream as classified by Ohio EPA) and part of the State Scenic River portion of the river.
River status is given to this portion of the Olentangy because of the numerous steep shale cliffs and narrow ravines of its tributary streams.

Over the next 40 years the are going to remove all the low head/roller dams on the Olentangy.
In my opinion, it is the most beautiful river around to wade and to photograph.
Most smallies I pull out of the Olentangy look like they have just been painted with metallic paint and the carp look like they have just been detailed.

The Olentangy River flows through the middle of The Ohio State University (OSU) Campus and serves as a place for student activities such as a practice area for the crew rowing club and other boating types of activities such as canoeing and kayaking.
However, the two-mile stretch of the Olentangy from just south of the wetlands research park, just north of Dodridge, to the low head dam at 5th Avenue is one of the most impaired sections of the Olentangy River.
Due to the placement of various utilities that cross the River near five of the six dams, the low head dam at 5th Avenue is the only viable candidate for removal at this time.

The Olentangy River watershed -- an 88-mile area stretching from Crawford County into downtown Columbus -- has been identified by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency as one of the most impaired water sources in the state.
Study participants will be tackling water sources as part of the Olentangy River watershed this summer, gathering and analyzing data and conducting stream surveys.
The study is expected to continue through December 2005 and will involve recommendations submitted to the Ohio EPA regarding cleaning up the watershed based on the finds of the study.
