	Natural and Synthetic Surfactants
		Oleochemical surfactants, also referred to as ”natural,” are derived from plant oils such as palm, palm kernel or coconut oil, or from animal fats such as tallow, lard or fish oil.
		Petrochemical and oleochemical surfactants both come from natural sources, since crude oil is extracted from the earth and originates from plants.
		To illustrate this point, four surfactants (two oleochemical and two petrochemical) with similar chemical structure (same chain lengh; all essentially linear alcohol sources) were tested side by side in the laboratory using the same method and the same bacterial source.

	OLEOCHEMICAL INDUSTRY
		Production of oleochemicals in the Philippines started in 1967 when a company, Cocochemical Plant, Inc. started producing methyl esters, fatty alcohols and butyl cocophtalate using a technology provided for by Kao Corporation of Japan.
		It is interesting to note, moreover, that the Philippines has a legislation requiring the use of up to 60% of detergent raw materials as surfactants derived from coconut fatty alcohols.
		However, with the growing concern for environmental and consumer protection, further development of downstream processing of basic oleochemicals have been encouraged especially on various raw materials used in large scale applications, as in the case of detergents and related cleaning products.

		Kaufman (Vice-president for Oleochemicals for Henkel's Emery Group in Ohio) in a keynote address to the world conference on oleochemicals in 1990 said that the world production of fats and oils increased between 1960 and 1990 from 32.1 million metric tons to 80.6 million metric tons.
		In 1990, the world demand for oleochemicals was about 4.4 million metric tons with 50% of this representing market for fatty acids and 20% for fatty alcohols.

		OLEOCHEMICAL EXECUTIVES like Howard M. Findley, sales manager for Peter Cremer North America, have watched helplessly as the price of glycerin has dropped by almost half over the past few years to less than 50 cents per lb today.
		Findley’s company, the U.S. arm of Cremer Gruppe, a German food ingredients and oleochemical firm, began marketing biodiesel in 2002 through a toll manufacturing agreement with Corsicana Technologies, a small chemical maker that operates a former PandG facility in Corsicana, Texas.
		Gene Gebolys, World Energy’s founder and president, acknowledges the tension between the oleochemical and biodiesel industries, but he says the momentum is behind biodiesel.

		The expansion, which will make the Musim Mas oleochemical plant the second largest in the world after a plant in Malaysia owned by Sime Darby, is scheduled to be commissioned in 2007, according to Musim Mas Managing Director Surja.
		Musim Mas, one of the largest palm oil exporters in Indonesia, is the only firm in the country that has won for five successive years the Primanyarta award for distinguished export performance and the only winner so far of the Primanyarta gold award given by the government, Surja said.
