National Review: Greatness,Here & Now - opera great Olga Borodina
Borodina was given the honor of opening the 1998-99 season at the Met: She sang Dalila alongside her most distinguished Samson, Placido Domingo.
Borodina's sound and musicianship pack a wallop in both opera and liturgical music, and the Requiem, of course, is a combination of both.
In interviews, Borodina has described herself as a religious person, and while she is as starry a star as we have on the wicked operatic stage, she may well be at her best when the music is holiest.

Juan Diego Florez Review - L'italiana in Algeri, New York Met, February 2004
Borodina has given some splendid performances at the Met since her 1997 debut in Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov,"; but this captivating Isabella may be her best work to date.
Borodina sounded the slightest bit tentative in her entrance aria, "Cruda sorte," but she soon warmed up, and by the time she rallied Mustafa's Italian servants to her side in the rondo "Pensa alla patria," she had made the role her own.
The casting surprise was Olga Borodina as Isabella, the eponymous "Italiana." The Russian mezzo is normally heard in heavier roles, but she proved here that her superb technique can carry her through Rossini's bel canto demands, and her plush tone was a glory from top to bottom.

 Cheryl North Interviews Olga Borodina
I had an opportunity to talk to one of them, mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina, last Thursday during a brief meeting in the press room of the San Francisco Opera house just before she was to rehearse her number for the following night's Lotfi Mansouri Gala.
Although Borodina's initial seriousness permitted her only the most formal smile when we were introduced, she warmed when speaking about her family and her art.
Borodina herself was born in St. Petersburg to parents who both worked in a factory building pianos.

AP Photo/Metropolitan Opera, Marty Sohl :: Olga Borodina performs as Angelina during the final dress rehearsal of the Rossini opera "La Cenerentola" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005.
Olga Borodina is that rare singer who really can do it all, and audiences at the Metropolitan Opera are reaping the benefits this season.
Borodina, after all, is one of the leading dramatic mezzos in the world today, renowned for such grand tragic roles as Carmen, Dalila, and the vengeful princess Amneris in Verdi's "Aida." In fact, she'll sing the latter two roles when she returns to the house in February.

Russian mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina is here in Washington, to star in the Washington National Opera's final production of the season, Samson et Dalila (1877) by Camille Saint-Saëns, which opened on Saturday night.
Her CD of arias is spectacular, from the accurate, whirring melismas of "Nacqui all'affano/Non più mesta" from La Cenerentola to the rich tone and power of three selections from Samson et Dalila, which has become something of a signature role for her (her recording of the opera with José Cura has been well received).
Borodina's is my kind of mezzo-soprano voice, rich and mocha dark but without the crippling hypervibrato that is the crutch for many singers who lack natural power.

This was a concert which veered between extremes – undeniable greatness in Olga Borodina’s performance of Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death and mediocrity in Rostropovich’s lurid conducting of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.
Olga Borodina has one of the richest mezzo voices around and she brought heart-rending pathos and drama to these songs.
Rostropovich’s sensitive conducting, using a reduced orchestra, scaled the heights of tragedy but allowed Borodina plenty of room to measure her dynamics so they were always audible.

Borodina is a favorite at SFO where she performed her first Carmen in 1996 and a notably fine Lyubasha in The Tsar's Bride last season.
Borodina, her voice ranging from a buttery and mellow lower register to full out (but never harsh) higher tones, is an actor of notable skill; she negotiates changes in mood from pure seductiveness to wily scheming to feigned rejection, never falling into the potentially fatal trap of hamming up material already somewhat overripe.

Although Borodina is a mezzo-soprano she also has a light, lyrical and flexible quality with a wide dynamic and dramatic range producing a wonderful variety of moods and emotions.
