 Chaetopoda - LoveToKnow 1911
These two vessels in the Oligochaeta are united in the anterior region of the body by a smaller or greater number of branches which surround the oesophagus and are, some of them at least, contractile and in that case wider than the rest.
Among the Oligochaeta the sexually mature worm is distinguished from the immature worm by the clitellum and by the development of genital setae.
The Oligochaeta contrast with the Polychaeta in the general presence of outgrowths of the septa in the genital segments, which are either close to, or actually involve, the gonads, and into which may also open the funnels of the gonad ducts.

OLIGOCHAETA - Online Information article about OLIGOCHAETA
It has been ascertained that the nephridia of Oligochaeta are preceded in the embryo by;a pair of delicate and sinuous tubes, also found in the Hirudinea and Polychaeta, which are larval excretory organs.
There is thus a broad resemblance to the Eudrilidae, to which group of Oligochaeta the Hirudinea are further akin by reason of the invariably unpaired condition of the generative apertures, and the existence of a copulatory apparatus (both of which characters, however, are present occasion-ally in other Oligochaeta).
It is to be noted that the Hirudinea differ from the Oligochaeta in that the male pore is in advance of the gonads (except in Acanthobdella, which here, as in so many points, approximates to the Oligochaeta), whereas in Oligochaeta that pore is behind the gonads (again with an exception, Allurus).

 Earthworms (The Oligochaeta)
Long thin worms with no obvious appendages to their bodies and greatly reduced heads so that when the animal is still it is not sometimes obvious which end is the head and which is the tail.
The Oligochaeta are the second largest group of the Annelida, with 3,100 known species they make up about one third of the phylum.
The 'Oligo' in Oligochaeta means 'few' just as the 'Poly' in Polychaeta means many, thus the Oligochaeta are the animals with few chaetae, or few bristles.

Have spermatophores in Eisenia fetida (Oligochaeta, Lumbricidae) any reproductive role? - Science - RedOrbit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
None of the hypotheses tested were supported from our results and we found that spermatophores had no effect on the reproductive success of this earthworm species.
In earthworms from the family Lumbricidae (Oligochaeta), spermatophores have often been described.
Spermatophores are defined as capsules formed by glands in the neighbourhood of the male pore, filled with spermatozoa and placed on the body of the partner (Michaelsen 1926).

The class Oligochaeta represents the most diverse and widely distributed group of annelids in freshwater habitats in North America.
To date, 11 species representing 8 genera and four families of aquatic oligochaetes have been documented from the Park -- all represent new Park records, and one represents a new state record for North Carolina.
Funds received in March 2001 will support the collection and identification of aquatic oligochaetes from 10-14 sites in the GSMNP during April 2001, and a similar number of sites again in September 2001.
